Course will explore Newton's laws of motion along with studying how various simple machines work and make our lives easier.
I will be teaching from The Good and the Beautiful: Motions and Simple Machines Science Book. This course will focus on Newton's 3 laws of motion. Along with Newton's Laws we will be exploring force, motion, inertia, speed and gravity. In this course we will also learn about simple machines such as wedges, levers, inclined planes, wheel and axle, pully and screw. I will be performing many of the activities on the screen for the kids to see. I will list what items are needed for your kids to participate in the activities at home. Most supplies needed can typically be found around the house.

Motion and Simple Machine Lesson Book and Student Journal from The Good and The Beautiful Lesson 1: Force and Motion - Heavy Book - Pillow (larger and weighing less than the book) Lesson 2: Newton's First Law - 10 pennies - Index Card - Cup (glass or ceramic is best) - Marble or Ping-pong ball Lesson 3: Speed and Velocity - Marble (or other ball) - 2 pieces of tape placed 4 feet apart on the ground - Timer - Calculator - Yard Stick for measure between the pieces of Lesson 4: Newton's Second Law - Ping-pong ball - Marble - Drinking Straw Lesson 5: Gravity - Small toy car - 6 thick books - Cookie sheet -2 different-sized balls (not ping-pong ball) like a marble, gold ball, basketball, soccer ball, tennis ball, baseball, etc. Lesson 6: Newton's Third Law - Apple or other similar item Lesson 7: Energy and Motion - Balloon - Empty toilet paper roll - Scissors - Tape - Marshmallow, pom-poms, or cotton balls Lesson 8: Simple Machines - A container of crayons - Broom - Dishcloth Lesson 9: Wedges and Levers - Ruler - 10 pennies - 5oz can of food (like tuna or cat food) Lesson 10: Inclined Planes, Wheels and Axles - Raw potato - Knife to cut potato (or have them pre-sliced for children in .5" slices) - 7-9 craft sticks - Cardboard or cardstock - 3-6 brads (3/4") - 1 pushpin per child - Pointed scissors or screwdriver(to poke holes through the carboard) Lesson 11: Pulleys and Screws - None Lesson 12: Complex Machines and Project Day Children will have a chance to make a complex machine. They will explain what simple machines they used to make their project and explain how they work.
