Course Summary

Middle School Foundations ELA is a weekly class where students build confidence in grammar, writing, and language skills through direct instruction, engaging practice, and creative expression. Each session focuses on one key skill, helping learners strengthen their academic writing while also discovering how clear communication reflects God’s truth.

Course Description

Clear communication matters—not only for school but for life and faith. This weekly ELA class equips middle schoolers to grow in grammar, writing, and language skills while also understanding how these tools help us read, communicate, and share God’s truth. Each week focuses on a high-impact skill, so students can join anytime and consistently grow in both academic and spiritual confidence. Every class includes: ✏️ Grammar Rule of the Day — Focused practice with examples and activities. Just as God’s Word is precise and trustworthy, we practice precision in language. 📘 Mini-Lesson on Writing/Language Skills — Exploring skills like sentence variety, dialogue, figurative language, and strong thesis statements while connecting how words carry meaning and influence. ✍️ Practice Time — Writing activities, short responses, or creative exercises that give students room to practice and grow. 💬 Share & Reflect — Opportunities for feedback and group sharing, reminding learners that our words can build up and encourage others (Ephesians 4:29). This class encourages learners not only to sharpen their academic skills but also to think about how language conveys truth, expresses creativity, and reflects God’s design for communication. *This course pairs perfectly with my Plot Twists and Timeless Tales for a complete ELA course.*

March 30 — Crafting Strong Thesis Statements Grammar: Subject–verb agreement in complex sentences Faith Connection: Just as a thesis provides a strong foundation for an essay, God’s Word provides the foundation for truth (Matthew 7:24). April 6 — Sentence Variety and Rhythm Grammar: Combining sentences with semicolons and conjunctions Faith Connection: Just as writing flows with variety, God has gifted us with unique voices and styles to share His truth April 13 — Writing Realistic Dialogue Grammar: Paragraph breaks and punctuation in dialogue Faith Connection: Words reveal character—Jesus reminds us in Matthew 12:34 that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” April 20 — Active vs. Passive Voice Grammar: Identifying passive voice and when to avoid it Faith Connection: Active voice communicates clearly and directly—just as God actively communicates His love and truth through His Word. April 27- NO CLASS May 4 — Hooks & Leads for Argument Writing Grammar: Introductory phrases and comma use Faith Connection: Just as we draw readers in with a strong opening, Jesus often began with stories and questions that captured attention. May 18 — Analyzing Theme in Short Texts Grammar: Correct punctuation in complex sentences Faith Connection: Every story has a theme—likewise, God’s Word has one unifying message of redemption. May 25-BREAK — Writing Suspense & Tension Grammar: Ellipses and dashes to build suspense Faith Connection: Stories build suspense, but God reminds us that He is always in control of the outcome. — Descriptive Writing with Sensory Language Grammar: Adjective order and comma placement Faith Connection: God created a rich, sensory world for us to describe and enjoy (Psalm 19:1). — Avoiding Clichés: Writing with Originality Grammar: Precise word choice and correct thesaurus use Faith Connection: God calls us to fresh, honest words that speak truth, not empty repetition (Matthew 6:7). — Counterclaims in Argument Writing Grammar: Transitions for contrast and opposing views (however, although, on the other hand) Faith Connection: We can respond to opposing ideas with clarity and respect, just as Paul reasoned with others in love (Acts 17). — Formal vs. Informal Tone Grammar: Avoiding contractions, slang, and casual style in formal writing Faith Connection: Paul reminds us to adapt to our audience, “becoming all things to all people” (1 Corinthians 9:22). — Writing Strong Conclusions Grammar: Parallel structure for emphasis and rhythm Faith Connection: Endings matter—our words, like our faith, should point back to God’s truth (Colossians 3:17). — Figurative Language in Writing Grammar: Similes, metaphors, and personification review Faith Connection: Jesus often used figurative language in parables to illustrate truth in vivid, memorable ways. — Word Choice for Persuasion Grammar: Powerful verbs and loaded language Faith Connection: Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” — Sentence Combining & Transitions Grammar: Transition words and sentence variety Faith Connection: Just as transitions connect ideas in writing, God’s Word connects all of history into His redemptive story. — Research Writing Basics Grammar: Integrating sources and avoiding plagiarism Faith Connection: Truth matters—Colossians 3:9 reminds us to put away falsehood. — Writing Character Analysis Grammar: Pronoun clarity (avoiding vague references) Faith Connection: Just as we analyze fictional characters, God examines the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). — Writing About Setting & Atmosphere Grammar: Prepositions and prepositional phrases Faith Connection: God places people in specific times and places for His purpose (Acts 17:26). — Writing with Purpose: Informative Texts Grammar: Subject–verb agreement review Faith Connection: Informative writing explains truth clearly—just as God’s Word instructs and guides (Psalm 119:105). — Poetry & Word Play Grammar: Line breaks, rhythm, figurative language in poetry Faith Connection: Much of Scripture is written in poetic form (Psalms, Proverbs). — Revising for Stronger Sentences Grammar: Avoiding fragments and run-ons Faith Connection: Just as we revise writing to make it stronger, God shapes and refines us (Philippians 1:6). — Writing Informal & Formal Letters Grammar: Capitalization and formatting rules Faith Connection: Paul’s epistles (letters) model how words can encourage, teach, and guide. — Writing Personal Narratives Grammar: Past tense consistency Faith Connection: Testimonies are personal narratives—sharing how God has worked in our lives (Psalm 66:16). — Writing Persuasive Essays Grammar: Logical transitions and structure Faith Connection: Proverbs 16:23 says, “The heart of the wise teaches his mouth.” Persuasion should be truthful and wise. — Writing Reviews & Opinions Grammar: Using modifiers correctly (avoiding misplaced/dangling modifiers) Faith Connection: Believers are called to “test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
