Learn to draw insects in the styles of artists Joris Hoefnagel and Jan van Kessel. Also included in each class is a brief overview of the life and work of each artist.
Part artist study, part art project, this class will introduce students to the delightful artwork of Artist Joris Hoefnagel, best known for painting beestjes—“little beasts" or "living creatures” in Dutch, and Artist Jan van Kessel, known for his insect studies. Each class will include: • an introduction to the life and work of the artist • an insect art project inspired by the artwork of each artist Hoefnagel didn't just paint his work using watercolors, he often added other elements to add a touch of sparkle and color. The end result was stunning. To mimic his style, we will use a variety of mediums to create a similar effect. Students will have two choices for their Kessel art project: 1. an arthropod and snake-themed project 2. an insect, floral, and berry-themed project This class is for students who are willing to take a bit more time with their drawings in order to make the drawings look more realistic. Students will have an opportunity to showcase their art after each class.
