ASL Game Time Camp (Bible-based)

Course Summary

This is a Christian themed ASL Game time camp. Together students take part in fun challenges and trivia contents that incorporate Biblical concepts all while learning American Sign Language.

Course Description

In this camp, students will learn basic beginner's American Sign Language vocabulary through fun, game-based instruction. The five vocabulary topics are as follows: the alphabet, numbers, colors, foods, and animals. Each class day will encompass a different theme with interwoven Bible history and facts. Games will mainly consist of Kahoots and Bible trivia. If we have extra time, I may throw in another game such as ASL hangman, Handshape Charades, Fingerseeks (ASL word-searches), fingerspelling reading challenges, other number games, logic games, etc... This camp is great for beginners and intermediate signers alike. Beginners will be introduced to a brand new, beautiful, visual language and learn over 50 vocabulary handshapes and signs as well as some very basic ASL communication guidelines. More advanced signers will get the opportunity to refine core skills such as fingerspelling, receptiveness (the ability to recognize and understand another's signing) and signing speed. Content will be introduced at a somewhat rapid pace, so outside practice is recommended, but not required as this is an introductory class. The objective is for students to enjoy learning a new language We will utilize one or all of the following online educational gaming platforms during our class: Kahoot, Quizzizz, GimKit.

Syllabus

Class 1 - Students will learn the ASL alphabet and play a Bible based Scattergories game in which they fingerspell answers that begin with a specific letter. Class 2 - Students will learn color signs. We will learn about how to tell others about Christ using the wordless book, a color-coded story and manner of proclaiming and explaining salvation to others. We will play Kahoot to help us remember all of the color signs. Class 3 - Students will learn to count to 20 in ASL. They will play a Kahoot to reinforce the numbers signs they have learned. Students will participate in a Bible-based number trivia to help reinforce what they have learned. Class 4 - Students will learn food signs and play a Kahoot to reinforce what they have learned. They will finally participate in a Bible based food trivia to review their newly acquired vocabulary. Class 5 - Students will learn animal signs and play a Kahoot to reinforce what they have learned. They will finally participate in a Bible-based animal trivia to review their newly acquired vocabulary.

Supplies

Students will need: - Bible - Ability to open a new tab and access Kahoot (without accidentally closing class meeting tab) - Device camera set up to capture the top of student's head to at least 4 inches above the waist. - Hands to sign and an excitement to learn!
